AREF:SHEKANJ-E TORREH YE ZOLFAT

AREF
:

This lyric poem of Aref written for Taj Saltaneh,Aref's beloved Nasseredinshah's daughter,in 1325 H/1906

The coils of thy curly locks are in twists and twines
My heart is in torture in the coils of those ringlets full of curls

No strenght  to walk have I through weakness in this condition
It is wonderful that even my shadow has become a load too heavy for my shouldewrs to bear

In as much as the pain of separation from her has emaciated me thus
by the life of a friend I say my shirt has become bare and void of my body

Unknown to me every night my heart goes to the lane of the beloved
Quarter and mercy from my luck for this one too has become my rival

In this cage nothing remains of me except a handful of feathers
What good if my cage is once again in the garden

From the moment she beheld her own face in the mirror
Thank God that she has been captivated by her own beauty

Ever since the candle consumed the moth in the fire of love
See how it is involved in the toil of consuming itself too

I am happy that poverty has bestowed on me the crown of sovereignty
Hereafter the Shah has become my begger

The echo of Aref's songs has filled the surface of the earth
Hence his songs have become the sweet topic of gatherings.
